CONCERT: Anthology featuring Jimi Dougan (formerly with The Young Senators)
It was part of the culture for young black men in the 60s. You got together with your buddies and sang on the street corners, in the gym and at parties. You sang doo-wop, those rhythm and blues hits full of vocal harmonies. You dreamed of hitting the big time, wearing fancy suits, performing your hit songs and meeting your fans. D.C.’s own Jimi Dougans saw his dreams come true. He hit the big time in the 70s performing at the Apollo Theatre, Carnegie Hall, Madison Square Garden, Radio City Music Hall and the Greek Theatre.

From Yoruban spirituality to blues to fusion to Frank Zappa…further exploring the link between John Coltrane and African poly-rhythms, Spanish Moors and Puerto Rican country jibaros”

Ben Ratliff of The New York Times- “This ban rockets between bop, straight-up and charging, to the languorous bolero, to galloping Cuban timba, to rhythms from Puerto Rico and Brazil and the Caribbean…it is propulsive, slangy, and above all historically literate.”

It’s a gathering of hard working members of our community who sit in traffic on the beltway, stand-up on the subway, travel the BW parkway and want to fellowship and have a down home good time with their neighbors, before they pull into their own driveways.

This year’s Juke promises to be bigger, better and packed with even mo’ Fish and mo’ blues then last. Come on in for those down home blues, stop on by and “bust a gut” at the Fish fry.
