Community Centers
The cornerstone of the leisure services delivery system in Prince George's County is the community center. The Commission opened its first community center in 1968 and now operates 40 community centers across the county. Some of these centers are freestanding buildings, and others are attached to schools. Each center offers classes, programs, drop-in activities and special events for people of all ages. Gymnasiums, meeting rooms, kitchens, multipurpose activity rooms, weight/fitness rooms and pre-school rooms are some of the components found in the centers. Outdoor amenities vary from site to site and include combinations of play equipment, athletic fields, multipurpose courts, picnic areas, and trails. The newly renovated Baden Community Center located within Baden Elementary School. The center has a new fitness room, new hardwood gym floor, storage area, and office space. Beltsville Community Center, a freestanding recreation structure, is located within the Little Paint Branch Stream Valley Park along a hiker/biker trail. College Park Community Center was built in 1995, adjacent to Paint Branch Elementary School. The Youth Soccer Complex consists of three short-sided soccer fields that will be used for soccer skills classes, a variety of league play, and summer camps. The complex also facilitates the role of educating referees, participants, and children through a variety of instructional workshops. These workshops include such topics as grant writing for adults, soccer skill sessions for children, and coaching clinics for parents.
College Park Youth Services Center offers a variety of recreation programs for youths ages 3 - 17. Harmony Hall Regional Center occupies a portion of a former elementary school which was renovated extensively. The regional center includes a multi-purpose room with a stage, five
meeting rooms, pre-school room, fitness room, and offices. The multi-purpose room is available for public rental. In the Fall of 2005, the Oakcrest Community Center opened as a unique community Park School/Center adjacent to the William Hall Elementary School. The facility includes a gymnasium, multi purpose room, state of the art fitness/exercise room, dance room, community room, offices and classrooms. Outdoor facilities will include tennis courts, playground, soccer and softball fields, and a basketball court. Look for a wide variety of recreation programs and classes in the areas of arts, fitness, dance, computers, martial arts, creative dramatics, and sports. After school programming, Xtreme Teens activities, summer and holiday camps are highlights of the programs we offer for young citizens. Patuxent Community Center is located in Marlboro Meadows in Upper Marlboro, Maryland. This recreation facility is available to the public Monday-Friday from 3-9:30 pm and on Saturday from 9 am-2 pm. The center is closed on Sundays. The building includes a lobby, office space, restrooms and a basketball gym. The recreation center offers the following courses in the gym: Fitness - Kids (9-12 yrs.), Awesome Abs (18 yrs. & up), Martial Arts - Tang Soo Do (mixed ages), Hand Dance, and Line Dance.
