Surratt

VISITOR INFORMATION

Surratt House is open to the public mid-January thru mid-December. Walk-in tours are available with costumed guide on Thursdays & Fridays from 11 am-3 pm and on Saturdays & Sundays from 12 noon-4 pm. Weekday group tours for 10 or more are available by appointment by calling 301-868-1121. Surratt House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

James O. Hall Research Center, a well-stocked research library, is available to those studying the Lincoln assassination. Included are microfilm holdings on: the Lincoln Assassination Suspects file fromt eh National Archives, Library of Congress materials, provost marshall's files, Old Capitol Prison records, and more. Also available are all major books on the subject, many of which are out-of-print, as well as extensive vertical file information. The research center is open by appointment by calling 301-868-6185.

The Surratt Visitor's Center opened in 1988. Although the building is not historical, it does stand on part of the original acreage owned by the Surratt family. Housed here are artifacts and photographs relative to the Surratt story. Prominently displayed is an electric map highlighting the escape route of John Wilkes Booth. A gift shop features a wide array of books on the Civil War, Lincoln, and the Lincoln assassination. Unique gifts and collectibles are also available.

$3/adults, $2/seniors, $1/ages 5-18, FREE/ages 4 & under

Directions to Surratt House:
Located in Clinton, Maryland, southwest of Andrews Air Force Base.

From the Capital Beltway (I-495), take Exit 7A, south on Route 5 (Branch Avenue). Proceed 3.5 miles to a right-hand exit for Route 223 (Woodyard Road). At foot of ramp, bear right. Proceed one mile to second traffic light and turn left onto Brandywine Road. The museum complex will be on your left.

From Route 3/301 South to Upper Marlboro, exit onto Route 4 (Pennsylvania Avenue) toward Washington. Proceed 3 miles to exit for Route 223 (Woodyard Road). At foot of ramp, turn left onto Woodyard Road and continue into the town of Clinton (about 4 miles). After crossing under the overpass for Route 5, proceed one mile to the second traffic light, and turn left onto Brandywine Road. The museum complex will be on your left.
