M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation Provides Update on the Southern Regional Aquatic Wellness Center

July 16, 2024

RIVERDALE, Md. – The Southern Regional Aquatic Wellness Center will remain closed until further notice. M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County closed the pool to the public on January 29, 2024, after cracks developed in the pools. Contractors and engineers have been working diligently to investigate and resolve the issues affecting the functionality of the pool. Out of an abundance of caution, the Department is conducting additional testing to determine any further necessary repairs to fully resolve the issues and safely reopen the pool to the public.

The Department is actively working with contractors to determine the cause of the facility’s damage and to implement repairs to include but not limited to…

·      Replacement of concrete coping

·      Application of new whitecoat surfaces for both pools

·      Repairs to ramps for both pools

·      Repairs to the pool deck to address cracking

·      Reconstruction of the ramp wall in the main pool

The decision to close the aquatic facility impacting the services, programs, and engagement opportunities normally offered to the community, was and remains necessary. We recognize the inconvenient and significant impact this closure has on our community. Your patience is deeply valued as we focus on ensuring the safety and quality of the aquatic facility. These necessary assessments and repairs are vital to maintaining the facility’s integrity and to providing a safe aquatic environment for all patrons.

We encourage individuals to explore alternative aquatic facilities with M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County here. We apologize for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience and understanding as we work to restore amenities at the Southern Regional Aquatic Wellness Center.
