M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation Welcomes Patrons to the Newly Renamed Lakeland College Park Community Center!
December 16, 2024
Riverdale, MD — We are thrilled to announce that the College Park Community Center has officially been renamed the Lakeland College Park Community Center!
This name change is part of a restorative justice effort by M-NCPPC, Department of Parks and Recreation, Prince George’s County, to honor the legacy of the Lakeland community. Lakeland holds deep historical significance as the only area in College Park where African Americans were allowed to live during segregation. Tragically, the neighborhood was permanently altered in the 1970s and 80s during the Lakeland Urban Renewal Project, which displaced many families, most of whom were unable to return.
By incorporating “Lakeland” into the community center’s name, we aim to preserve the memory of this vibrant and close-knit community while providing a welcoming space for all residents today. This change reflects our commitment to honoring our shared history and ensuring that every community member feels represented and connected.
What This Means for You
- Programs and Services: Our offerings remain the same, and the community center continues to serve as a hub for programs, resources, and events.
- Updated Signage: The name has already been updated on the facility’s door. Additional updates to signage, existing printed materials, and digital content will take time to complete. We appreciate your patience during this transition.
- Engagement Opportunities: We encourage you to learn more about the history of Lakeland and share your thoughts with us at public.affairs@pgparks.com.
Join Us in Celebrating!
We hope the renaming inspires excitement and pride. Stay tuned for opportunities to engage with the center and participate in events that highlight the remarkable legacy of Lakeland.
If you have any questions or would like to learn more, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We look forward to continuing to serve you at the Lakeland College Park Community Center!
Thank you for your support and understanding as we honor the past while building a brighter future.
Sincerely,
