UHURU Quilter's Guild Exhibit - Tribute to the Queen of Rock & Roll Tina Turner

This event runs from February 20 through April 28, public hours (Thurs – Mon, 10 am – 4 pm); Closed April 20

Quilters were challenged to interpret Tina Turner’s songs, movies, or lifestyle, using any quilting style or technique– traditional, contemporary, improvisational, modern or fiber art. This exhibition will be featured for an extended period for both Black and Women’s History Months and for the Montpelier Festival of Herbs, Tea, and the Arts on the last Saturday of April.

Classical and jazz pianist and singer Hazel Scott (1920–1981) was the first person of African descent to host their own network TV show in America (The Hazel Scott Show). The Coalition for African Americans in the Performing Arts (CAAPA) explores Scott’s life, legacy, and music. Journey with curator Professor Nevilla Ottley as you hear songs played and loved by Scott, with narration exploring and highlighting the life of the musician, who was also an outspoken critic of racial discrimination and segregation.

Jane Austen with Tea: A Glimpse into her Life and Literature

Please join us in celebrating Women’s History Month and the 250th birthday of Jane Austen with historian Tracy Gillespie. The talk for the afternoon tea will be an enjoyable look at Jane Austen’s life through Austen’s famous literature. Brush up on your favorite JA books and movies, as there will be trivia and prizes. This program is in partnership with the Prince George’s County Historical Society. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Historian Dr. Douglas R. McElrath of the University of Maryland will discuss “The 1856 Project”, a massive undertaking of the Universities Studying Slavery. Dr. McElrath will discuss the Underground Railroad activity that took place on the Washington Baltimore Turnpike. Children must be accompanied by an adult. Walk-ins welcome. Guests may bring a bag lunch.

Mark Historic Preservation Month at Marietta House Museum. M-NCPPC Planning Department’s Daniel Tana will provide important information about how to apply for historic-preservation tax credits. Often homeowners of historic houses do preservation work on their homes but may not be fully aware of the tax credits and financial help that may be available. This talk is an opportunity to ask those questions!
